L-Theanine vs Magnesium Glycinate: Differences and Taking Them Together

L-theanine vs magnesium glycinate: L-theanine is an amino acid from tea that supports calm; magnesium glycinate is an essential mineral bound to glycine. Many take both at night, keeping supplement magnesium at 350 mg or less.

L-theanine and magnesium glycinate both support calm and sleep, but they are very different things. L-theanine is an amino acid from tea that helps a busy mind settle without sedation, while magnesium glycinate is an essential mineral bound to the amino acid glycine that fills a common gap in the diet. You can take them together, and many people pair them in the evening.

Key Takeaways

  • L-theanine is studied for sleep quality: a review of 13 trials of L-theanine on its own concluded that 200 to 450 mg a day appears safe and effective for supporting healthy sleep in adults (Cotter et al., 2026).
  • Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems, and 48 percent of Americans get less than they need from food and drinks (NIH ODS).
  • In a 4-week trial of 155 adults who slept poorly, 250 mg of magnesium a day as bisglycinate modestly improved sleep scores versus placebo (Schuster et al., 2025).
  • A daily tablet with magnesium and L-theanine plus other ingredients lowered stress scores in a 28-day trial (Noah et al., 2022).
  • Keep magnesium from supplements at or under 350 mg a day unless a clinician advises otherwise.

What Each One Is

L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found in tea leaves. Your body does not need it the way it needs a mineral; people take it for what it does, which is mainly supporting a calm, focused state. It is not a sedative, so it is used both during the day and before bed. Our L-theanine ingredient page explains where it comes from.

Magnesium glycinate, also called magnesium bisglycinate, is magnesium bound to glycine. Magnesium is an essential mineral and a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems, including those for protein synthesis and muscle and nerve function. Adults need 310 to 420 mg a day from food and supplements combined (NIH ODS). The glycinate form is popular because it is gentle on the stomach; our guide to magnesium glycinate benefits covers the mineral in depth.

So the core difference is this: magnesium fills a nutrient need, and L-theanine adds a calming nudge. That is why they are not really rivals.

L-Theanine vs Magnesium Glycinate for Sleep

What the L-theanine trials measured

A 2025 meta-analysis of 19 studies with 897 people found L-theanine improved how quickly people felt they fell asleep, daytime tiredness and overall sleep quality scores compared with placebo (Bulman et al., 2025). A 2026 review of 13 trials that used L-theanine on its own, 550 people at 50 to 900 mg a day, reported benefits for falling asleep, staying asleep, sleep satisfaction and feeling refreshed on waking (Cotter et al., 2026). In one 4-week trial, 30 healthy adults taking 200 mg a day improved their sleep quality scores, with better scores than placebo for time to fall asleep and sleep disturbance (Hidese et al., 2019). More detail is in our guide to L-theanine for sleep.

What the magnesium glycinate trial measured

In a randomized, double-blind trial, 155 adults aged 18 to 65 who reported poor sleep took two capsules 30 to 60 minutes before bed for 4 weeks: either magnesium bisglycinate, giving 250 mg of magnesium and about 1.5 g of glycine a day, or a placebo. Scores on a standard sleep severity questionnaire fell by 3.9 points with magnesium versus 2.3 with placebo, a small effect. People who ate less magnesium to begin with appeared to improve more, and no serious adverse events were reported (Schuster et al., 2025). Our guide to magnesium glycinate for sleep covers dose and timing.

So which is better for sleep?

They suit different people. If racing thoughts keep you up, L-theanine targets that directly. If your diet is light on magnesium, magnesium glycinate fills a real gap, and the trial suggests those people may notice the most. Plenty of people have both reasons, which is where the pairing comes in.

Daytime Use: Calm Focus vs a Daily Mineral

The two also differ outside the bedroom. L-theanine is often used during the day: in a meta-analysis of 31 randomized trials, a single 200 mg dose taken 30 to 60 minutes before testing improved choice reaction time in healthy adults, a measure of attention (Gerolymos et al., 2026). Our L-theanine dosage guide covers amounts for focus and for sleep.

Magnesium, on the other hand, is a nutrient you need every day, wherever the clock is. What matters most is the total you get from food and supplements, so it fits whatever time of day you will remember it.

Taking L-Theanine and Magnesium Glycinate Together

Yes, you can take them together, and they are a common evening pair because they do different jobs. One trial tested a combination directly. In 100 adults who had felt stressed for at least a month but were otherwise healthy, a daily tablet with 150 mg of magnesium, B vitamins, rhodiola and a green tea extract providing 50 mg of L-theanine lowered stress scores more than placebo at days 14 and 28, and the difference held at day 56. Daytime problems from sleepiness also improved, significantly by day 56, and the authors said its effects on sleep need further study (Noah et al., 2022).

A simple way to pair them:

  • Magnesium glycinate 30 to 60 minutes before bed, as in the 2025 trial, staying within the 350 mg supplement limit.
  • L-theanine in the evening as you wind down, and during the day if you like it for calm focus.
  • Start one at a time for a few nights so you know how each feels.

If melatonin is also on your list, our comparison of magnesium vs melatonin for sleep covers how those two fit together.

Safety and Side Effects

Both are well tolerated by most adults. Across 31 randomized trials of L-theanine with 1,168 people, no serious adverse events were reported (Gerolymos et al., 2026). Glycinate is not among the magnesium forms most often linked to loose stools, which are carbonate, chloride, gluconate and oxide (NIH ODS).

For magnesium, keep supplements and medications at or under 350 mg a day; that limit does not count magnesium from food. Healthy kidneys clear extra magnesium, so check with a clinician first if you have kidney problems (NIH ODS). Talk with a clinician too if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and if you take prescription medicine, check with your clinician before adding either one. Our guide to magnesium glycinate side effects has the details.

Who Might Choose Which

  • A busy mind at bedtime: L-theanine.
  • Calm focus during the day without caffeine: L-theanine.
  • A diet light on green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains: magnesium glycinate, to fill the gap.
  • Both a busy mind and low magnesium intake: take them together in the evening.

Benefits build with consistent daily use: months 1 to 2 can bring early changes, and 3 months and beyond is where the full benefit builds.
